Before You Begin

  1. You may need to refer to transcripts so be sure to have them handy. We will also need one official copy submitted to SSU Admissions.
  2. You will need transcripts for every college attended in order to enter your transfer work.
  3. Disable your pop-up window blocker, or set it to accept pop-ups from the Cal State Apply site.
  4. You can start, stop, and save your application information throughout the process. You do not have to complete the entire application during one session.
  5. Each page has a "Save" option. It will be greyed out if you are missing any information. Review each page carefully to make sure you have answered all questions.
  6. The application fee for each application you submit is $70.
  7. You may choose only one program per campus but you may apply to more than one CSU campus at the same time.
  8. Make sure you are applying to the correct program. Once you have submitted your application, it is very difficult to change programs. Check the Dates and Deadlines section below for links to program-specific information.
  9. Pay attention to deadlines! They are in Cal State Apply, and on our Dates and Deadlines section.
  10. Apply for Financial Aid as early as possible, even before you submit your completed Cal State Apply application. It's free, and your request for aid will automatically be matched up to your application when it arrives. Apply for scholarships as soon as you have submitted your application.
  11. Domestic students may be asked what year they plan to move to the U.S.; just enter your year of birth.
  12. International applicants should submit applications as early as possible because additional time is needed to process international documents and prepare immigration paperwork. See "International Applicants" section below.
  13. If you have questions please review the instructions provided on the Cal State Apply website. Click on the Application Help Center to see PDF instructions.
  14. If you continue experiencing difficulties please contact the front office of SEIE at 707-664-2394 or extendeded@sonoma.edu. They will help refer you to your appropriate advising coordinator.

Transcripts

You must send one official, sealed copy of your transcript to SSU, following Admissions Office instructions. You do not need to request SSU transcripts, they are on file.

  • Send transcripts from every college attended, even if you did not complete your coursework.
  • We cannot accept transcripts dated more than two years prior to your application date.
  • International Students: See special notes under Additional Forms in the International Applicant section below.

Managing Your Application

Here are a few things we want to highlight for a smoother experience.

  • You can track your progress on your Cal State Apply dashboard, which will show what still needs to be completed before submission.
  • If you need help, there are guides and live help available (see above).
  • Even if your 60 units are still in progress, you must select "60 units or more" when asked about units completed. Otherwise, you will not be able to select the correct program.
  • Choose Sonoma Extension to see the list of our programs from which to choose.
  • Be sure to select the correct program; Cal State Apply may state the title differently. Program titles are available on our Dates and Deadlines section or contact the SEIE Admissions Specialist.
  • You may be asked for an "Alternate Program." You can just check the box to say you are not interested.

International Applicants

International applicants will need to take a few more steps to complete their applications.

Special Tips for Cal State Apply

Here are a few things we want to highlight for a smoother experience.

  • Be sure to follow all instructions regarding entering your citizenship status, especially when setting up your profile. Incorrect information entered here may affect what choices are available to you later in the application process.
  • You may be asked to enter your information more than once; please re-enter exactly as you entered before.
  • If questions regarding residency are asked that do not seem to apply to you, you should choose "non-resident" (or sometimes, "none").
  • If you are asked what year you will move to California or the U.S., enter the year you plan to start your SEIE program.
  • Before applying, review the International Student Application Checklist

Additional Forms

In addition to your Cal State Apply application and supporting program materials, international students should check Sonoma State's Required Documents for International Student Applications page for further instructions. The Admissions Office evaluator may ask for other documents as well.

*Please note that other pages on the SSU Admissions site regarding international applicants may not apply to programs administered by the School of Extended and International Education. You will be given further instructions by SEIE staff, and please contact us if you have any questions.

Foreign Coursework Evaluations

Click on how to submit transcripts to Sonoma State for more information.

All students must submit international transcripts to a third-party evaluation service.

Sonoma State regularly accepts foreign transcripts that have been evaluated by credential evaluation servicers and currently works closely with these servicers:

English Language Requirements

All applicants to Extended Education programs whose first language is not English, regardless of citizenship, must demonstrate competence in English. This may be demonstrated through:

  • 3 years of instruction through the medium of English at the high school or college level. This need not be in the United States.
***Important message to score recipients. Photocopies of English test scores will not be accepted  by International Admissions. Please refer to English Proficiency Exams Accepted section on the International Admissions Page and follow the Exam Provider Instructions in sending scores to Sonoma State University.
